The obverse features the official seal of the United Mexican States. This seal shows an eagle with a serpent in its beak and recalls the founding of Mexico City, then called Tenochtitlan. In radius above the seal are the words Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
The reverse of the coin features a winged Victoria with a laurel wreath in her right hand and a broken chain in her left, symbolizing freedom and national independence. Below the left hand is the Mo mint mark, for Mexico City. Behind the winged angel of victory are the famous Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes.
