At first, the "European Artistic Gymnastics Tournament" was organized every two years by the International Gymnastics Federation from 1903 to 1913 (6 pre-war editions).

It resumes after the Armistice (3 editions), it is in this edition organized in Paris by Charles Cazalet during the colonial exhibition of 1931 that the championship takes the title of "World Championships of artistic gymnastics". At first exclusively male, these will welcome female gymnasts from the next edition in 1934.
